Hazard Communication (often referred to as HazCom) is the set of processes and standards designed to ensure that information about the hazards of chemicals is properly classified and communicated to workers.
Also known as the "Right-to-Know" law, OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) mandates that employees have both a right and a need to know the identities and hazards of the chemicals they are exposed to when working.
The standard requires chemical manufacturers and importers to evaluate the hazards of the chemicals they produce, and prepare labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to convey the hazard information.
Hazard Communication is consistently one of OSHA's most frequently cited standards, often because employers fail to maintain an updated written program or lack proper documentation proving they trained their employees.
Ensure your employees are thoroughly trained on chemical hazards and that you have the digital documentation to prove it during an OSHA audit.
